    On this day 2009, Ireland defeated Bangladesh and qualified for World T20 Super 8’s: The 2009 World T20 was held in England in June 2009 which was the second World T20 tournament following the inaugural event in South Africa in September 2007. In 2009 World T20 – India, Bangladesh and Ireland were placed in Group A. Top 2 teams from each groups will qualify for Super 8’s. India defeated Bangladesh in their first match and then Bangladesh faced Ireland. It was a do-or-die match for Bangladesh to qualify for Super 8’s. But, Ireland shocked the cricket fans by beating Bangladesh and qualified for Super 8’s.

    Ireland won the toss and elected to field first against Bangladesh. Tigers started their innings and lost their openers early. At one stage, they lost 5 wickets for just 65 runs. Mashrafe Mortaza played a sensible innings of 33(19) and helped his team to reach a decent total of 137 in 20 overs. Ireland bowler Johnston picked up 3 wickets for just 20 runs in 4 overs.

    In the 2nd innings, Ireland openers JP Bray (2 from 10 balls) and Porterfield (23 from 29 balls) gone early without giving platform to middle-orders. Nial O’Brien entertained their fans with 3 fours and 3 sixes and gone for 40 runs. Mortaza dismissed Wilson for 10 when Ireland needed 50 runs in 35 balls. John Moony and Kevin O’Brien scored a match-winning partnership of 50 runs in just 24 balls. After Bangladesh lost the both matches against India and Ireland, they were out of the 2009 World T20 tournament. India and Ireland were selected to the Super 8’s of 2009 World T20 from Group A. Ireland’s Nial O’Brien was awarded as the Man of the Match for his brillaint knock of 40 for 24 balls.
