Many people are concerned about regular acne or skin breakouts that damages their skin barrier and makes it quite challenging for them to achieve a healthy and glowing skin. Acne is caused due to clogged pores which happens due to excess oil that traps the dead skin cells and hair follicles. This is where a good face wash helps in removing the excess oil and dust from the face and prevents skin breakout or acne.

However removal of excess sebum is done by an active ingredient which is present in the face wash. That’s why the importance of selecting the face wash with the right ingredient is very important to target their skin concern. But many people lack knowledge about important ingredients that help in targeting acne.

Therefore in this blog we will talk about the best active ingredients in a face wash that helps in preventing acne and expert tips to use the face correctly which will help in treating their acne and aiding in attaining a clear and smooth skin.

    Key Ingredients for Preventing Acne

These are some of the most commonly used active ingredients that are used in a face wash to prevent acne.

    Table of Contents

    • 1. Salicylic Acid
    • 2. Niacinamide
    • 3. Benzoyl Peroxide
    • 4. Sulphur
    • 5. Tea Tree Oil

    1. Salicylic Acid

It is the most preferred ingredient by people who are having oily or acne prone skin. It is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) and oily in nature which allows it to penetrate deeper into the pores and reduces the excess sebum and dissolves the trap materials such as dead skin cells or hair follicles, unclogs the pores and prevents acne or skin breakout.

A salicylic acid face wash is best for treating blackheads or whiteheads because the root cause of these skin breakouts present deeper in the pores and salicylic acid helps in clearing pores from deep.

    2. Niacinamide

It is a form of vitamin B3 which is a water-soluble vitamin and has calming properties. It helps in treating acne by managing the excess sebum which reduces the inflammation, swelling or redness of the skin and minimizes the appearance of the acne. Moreover it boosts the production of essential lipids and ceramides which makes the skin barrier, thus strengthening the skin barrier.

It is best suitable for people who are having sensitive skin because of its gentle and calmer nature and provides benefits by fighting against acne. Because other ingredients can cause skin irritation or dryness to this skin type.

    3. Benzoyl Peroxide

A more powerful active ingredient that helps in treating acne is benzoyl peroxide. It helps by introducing oxygen into the skin pores that helps in killing the acne causing bacteria (cutibacterium acnes) as this bacteria cannot survive in oxygen which prevents acne or skin breakout.

It is mostly used to target red, swollen pus-filled bumps. It is marketed in different strengths ranging from 2.5-10%. Sometimes people experience skin dryness and red marks. So it is generally preferred to start from lower strength in the initial days to prevent dryness.

    4. Sulphur

Sulphur has been used for preventing acne for a long period of time. It is a natural mineral which behaves like a sponge which helps in absorbing the excess oil from the skin and removes the dead skin cells that clog pores and prevent acne or skin breakout.

Sulphur based face wash comes with a distinct smell that many people do not like. However it is effective for treating blackheads and suitable for oily or mild acne. Using a lower concentration is preferred mostly as higher concentration cleansers can cause skin dryness.

    5. Tea Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is a plant derived ingredient used in the face wash which contains properties like antibacterial or anti-inflammatory which makes it suitable for preventing acne. Moreover it contains a compound terpenes which breaks the bacterial cell wall and kills the acne-causing bacteria that helps in reducing redness, excess oil and prevents acne.

A tea tree oil cleanser is ideal for targeting blemishes and redness from the skin. However if tea tree oil is used in higher concentration it can cause intense irritation.

Tips to Use the Face Wash Correctly

Even if you are using the best face wash, it will not provide the most benefits if it is not used properly. That’s why using the cleaner properly is essential. Follow the below instructions to use the face wash properly:

    • It is mostly preferred to use the face wash twice in a day: one in the morning and one before going to bed.
    • Avoid hot water and use lukewarm water for washing the face.
    • Gently massage the cleanser on the face in a circular motion for around 60-90 seconds and rinse thoroughly.
    • Dry the face with a clean towel.
